About Laser Vein Treatment
No one likes having unsightly vascular lesions or really noticeable veins on their face and body, especially when living in sunny California. Since these unattractive veins usually multiply over time and become more visible, it's advisable to seek treatment when you first notice them. Birthmarks, port wine stains, spider veins, and leg veins can be red, purple, or blue, which makes them really difficult to conceal or mask. Branching veins on the face and legs may progressively spread or get larger the older you get (unless you have a medical intervention with a trusted doctor). These treatments (often performed as a series) are not without risk and should be performed by a trained provider overseen by a plastic surgeon, like Dr. Karen Leong.
At our locations she can decrease the visibility of blood vessels on the face and body with lasers like the Vbeam, Clarity, or Perfecta laser technologies. Dr. Leong will suggest a personalized plan based on your unique needs and goals for your laser vein treatment.
"I can't say enough about Dr. Leong! I have struggled with stubborn unwanted fat around my middle section for years. Regardless of diet and exercise, I always seemed to have a muffin top that left me feeling insecure and uncomfortable. It only took one short meeting with Dr. Leong for me to finally feel confident with having her shape by middle through Liposuction and Thermage. I was previously very reluctant, but after meeting with her, I felt excited and ready. Dr. Leong's honest and straightforward, yet kind and pleasant approach put me right at ease. The proceedure itself went very smooth and Dr. Leong and her staff were helpful and available every step of the way. It has now been six months since my procedure and I am totally blown away with my results. They exceeded every possible expectation and I truly could not be happier!!"- S.K. / Yelp / Sep 19, 2018
"Lower face and neck lift - I’ve done every injectable from Botox to Sculptra and I wanted a more permanent fix to my aging face and neck. I had heard about Dr. Leong through a friend and I decided to make a consultation. When I met Dr. Leong I had my doubts about what this seemingly young doc could do for my 70+ year old face. How could she know what a woman my age needed? As we began to discuss my areas of c..."- E. / RealSelf / Mar 28, 2018

"Five Star Experience! - I have seen Dr. Leong for both medical and cosmetic visits. Her personality is very down to earth but precise which made me feel very comfortable going to her for multiple issues. I first saw Dr. Leong for a few minor skin tags, moles and cherry angiomas that were all over my body which I didn't like esthetically. She removed them with simplicity, quickness and I felt absolutely no pain. She..."- J. / RealSelf / Mar 11, 2018
"What a difference a great physician makes! - A year ago, I had the pleasure of consulting with Dr. Karen Leong for a minor lip asymmetry correction and augmentation. Always the professional, she listened to my concerns and clearly explained my options to get the results I was looking for. Dr. Leong made me feel completely comfortable and injected my lips to my complete satisfaction. Completely natural looking, and symmetrical. ..."- I. / RealSelf / Feb 24, 2018
Laser vein removal treatments at Dr. Leong can minimize the look of small to medium-sized blood vessels that are on the face and body. Frequently known as spider veins, these blood vessels are rarely a medical problem but they are considered a cosmetic problem. Many people avoid certain clothing (like shorts and swimsuits) or use a large amount of concealer to try to cover up these veins. Laser vein treatments are a good option for patients who are in generally good health, do not have a history of blood clots, and are not pregnant.
Nonsurgical laser vein removal treatments are completed in our offices as an outpatient procedure in about 20 – 40 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being addressed. During your laser vein reduction, you will lay comfortably in a private treatment room as the affected area is cleaned. If requested, a topical anesthetic can be applied before your procedure to reduce any potential discomfort. The laser handpiece is passed over the area so the energy can target the veins through a series of pulses that won't harm the rest of your body. You will be able to leave our office immediately to resume your normal routine.
What to Expect
Right after your laser vein removal treatment, you may notice redness, bruising, and swelling, but these symptoms should dissipate in around 7 – 10 days. For optimal healing, support or compression garments may be worn to encourage the circulation of blood. It's important to avoid prolonged sun exposure and you should apply sunscreen frequently to treated skin. Certain patients notice visible improvements right away but outcomes will vary for each patient. In your initial consultation with Dr. Leong, realistic expectations will be discussed along with recommendations on how many sessions will be needed to get your best results. More spider veins will probably form over time, so follow-up procedures may be needed every few years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this cost?
Laser vein removal is a treatment that is priced based on how many veins are being treated and how many sessions are needed to attain the desired results. During your consultation, we will evaluate your veins, the size of them and location, and determine the scope of the treatment needed to help establish a cost. Our office offers numerous payment options as well as special financing for cosmetic procedures.
Laser or sclerotherapy?
Laser vein removal works well for veins of all sizes and types. Depending on the types of veins present and the size, some treatments may work better than others depending on what is being addressed. Laser vein treatments work great for spider veins and are now considered the gold standard treatment for most cases. However, patients who have certain types of spider veins may be better candidates for sclerotherapy, which injects a solution into the vein to remove it. Larger veins such as varicose veins respond well to laser, but if the vein is large and bulging, surgery may be necessary. Veins treated with laser vein removal have a smaller chance of returning than if sclerotherapy alone is used. We will work with each patient to determine their best treatment choice based on their specific concerns and goals.
Does the vein go away?
Yes. Laser vein removal treats the vein with a focused beam of light that heats up the vein and then destroys it. The technology is very precise and is highly focused on the target area, which helps it to not affect the nearby skin. Once the vein dies off, it takes about 4 – 6 weeks for it to be reabsorbed by the body and disappear.
Where can the laser be used?
Spider veins can be found on the face, upper thighs, back of the legs, and around the ankles. Anywhere a spider vein exists, laser vein removal can be an appropriate treatment method. Our state-of-the-art lasers use precision when treating the specific vein so the tissue and skin around the veins, regardless of how delicate the area is, is generally unaffected.
Is this treatment painful?
Prior to the procedure, we typically will apply an ointment or local anesthetic to numb the area. Most patients report feeling a slight tingling sensation or sting as the laser focuses on the vein. Most lasers on the market, including the ones our practice use, have a built-in cooling system that helps provide a cooling effect. This minimizes discomfort while at the same time prevents the laser from getting too hot, which can result in a burn or additional damage to the area.
