Breast Reconstruction*

Procedure Details

Delayed Breast Reconstruction

Sometimes patients are not candidates for immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy. This may happen because patients need radiation or other factors. Delayed breast reconstruction with implants is usually and 2 or 3 stage process. The first stage creates a pocket for a tissue expander. This is a balloon that your surgeon will fill with sterile saline over the course of 1-3 months. The second stage replaces the tissue expander with a silicone implant. Dr. Leong likes to do fat transfer at this stage to improve skin quality and achieve a more natural appearance to the reconstructed breast. If the mastectomy was only performed on one side, you may need a breast reduction or lift on the other side to achieve symmetry. This can also be done at the second stage. A third stage is usually for nipple reconstruction.
