About Gynecomastia

If you have gynecomastia, you know that the kind of surgery you will need will be more than a simple fat reduction surgery. No matter the cause, developing breast tissue as a man can be frustrating, especially if nothing works to correct it. Gynecomastia is the medical term for male breast enlargement. It is a condition that can produce a female-like chest. In many cases, gynecomastia is caused by an underlying hormonal problem — but remember it is not fat. Newport Beach, CA plastic surgeon Dr. Karen Leong offers surgical breast reductions for men who have gynecomastia and will personalize a treatment plan that will reshape and sculpt your chest to look more masculine. While there may be stubborn pockets of fat in the area, it is the breast tissue that needs to go for you to feel less self-conscious with or without your shirt on.

Dr. Leong will perform a thorough evaluation of your presenting symptoms during your consultation. She may require some additional tests to see if what you have is breast tissue, which may include taking a sample of the tissue for a biopsy. Once a diagnosis has been made, Dr. Leon will go into great detail about how she will perform the surgery. In most cases, she provided power-assisted liposuction with Thermage radiofrequency skin tightening. She will only do an excision if it is needed to limit scarring. Dr. Leong is an exceptional plastic surgeon who regularly performs this popular cosmetic treatment for gynecomastia at our innovative Newport Beach facility.

Gynecomastia Ideal Candidates

Male breast reduction treatment is a procedure for men with oversized breasts that cannot be treated with medications or diet. If you feel bothered by the size and shape of your chest (but you're healthy and at a good weight), you may benefit from male breast reduction surgery by Dr. Leong. If you are an adolescent, you may also benefit from gynecomastia surgery; however, an additional procedure may be needed later during adulthood if excess breast tissue continues to develop. During your first appointment with Dr. Leong, she will discuss with you the next course of action to see if you are a candidate for this procedure.

Gynecomastia Surgical Technique

Dr. Leong will perform your gynecomastia treatment in an outpatient surgical center or hospital. You can expect to be under a general anesthetic before the procedure begins. She will perform the surgery with power-assisted liposuction. If you require skin to be removed, a small excision will take place if needed. Liposuction will eliminate the breast tissue from the chest wall. The nipple and areola will need to be repositioned as well. Dr. Leong will pull together the remaining skin to be sutured and well placed in inconspicuous areas (such as around the areola line). She can also offer Thermage (radiofrequency energy) skin tightening treatments as a part of the treatment plan to tighten up any leftover mildly loose skin.

What To Expect with Gynecomastia

At the conclusion of your gynecomastia treatment, the chest will be supported with a medical garment to help control swelling, bleeding, and bruising. In advanced cases where a more intricate approach was used, a drainage tube may be properly positioned to assist with fluid. The results following this procedure are immediately visible and most patients are extremely excited by the physical change. The incisions made during surgery take time to heal and scarring is usually barely visible. You should get medical clearance from Dr. Leong before incorporating exercise and strength training back into your routine to ensure proper healing.

Gynecomastia Frequently Asked Questions

How much does male breast reduction cost?
Gynecomastia is a medical issue that requires a skilled surgeon. This is why Dr. Leong urges you to focus on getting quality results over costs. To make your surgery easier to afford, Dr. Leong accepts many payment methods and we can. We can also help you find low-interest financing. While male breast reduction is generally not covered by insurance, it is worth talking to your provider to confirm.

Will I still have sensations in my nipples after treatment?
You may experience sensitivities (high and low) throughout your healing processes. As no two surgeries are exactly alike, it is difficult to say if your nipples will be hypo or hypersensitive after the breast tissue reduction surgery. Also, there is no exact timeline for when sensations should return to normal. If this is a concern for you, please ask about it in your consultation or at a follow-up appointment after surgery.

How can I tell if I have gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is excess breast tissue growth in the male chest, which may cause swelling, pain, and tenderness. Some men may have false gynecomastia (also known as pseudogynecomastia), so Dr. Leong encourages patients to lose weight with a healthy diet and exercise before seeking treatment for gynecomastia. If you have enlarged breasts at a healthy weight, Dr. Leong can perform an examination and tests to diagnosis gynecomastia. This may include blood tests, a mammogram, or a biopsy to rule out other conditions you might have instead of gynecomastia.

Can gynecomastia be treated with exercise or pills?
The most effective treatment for gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any medications to treat gynecomastia. While they are not approved for gynecomastia, some breast cancer medications (Tamoxifen or Raloxifene) may have limited effects. Strength training to build the pectoral muscles cannot reduce the amount of breast tissue, which is not fat.

Will this fix puffy or pointy nipples?
Puffy or pointy nipples may be caused by glandular gynecomastia. If this is a concern for you, please talk to Dr. Leong during your consultation. She will customize your treatment plan to use what she determines to be the best technique and incision pattern to correct your nipples. Large areolas can also be reduced during male breast reduction surgery. It's important to be honest with Dr. Leong about your needs and goals in your consultation, so she can render the results you want.
