To diminish the effects of aging and to prevent lines, wrinkles, and lax skin from forming on the forehead and upper face, Dr. Karen Leong in Newport Beach, CA is proud to offer BOTOX to local patients. This facial rejuvenation technique at our location provides amazing results and is popular among both men and women. BOTOX can make a dramatic enhancement to dynamic facial wrinkles, which are the result of expressions and movement with the muscles contracting on the forehead. The lines disappear as the face relaxes, but dynamic creases can still exist.

BOTOX is a purified strain of botulinum toxin (type A) that temporarily blocks the movements of the underlying tissue and muscle. To diminish the appearance of these dynamic lines and wrinkles, BOTOX is injected periodically to relax and soften the skin for several months at a time. This specific injection is most commonly placed by Dr. Leong between the brows where the number "11" appears, on the Crow's feet, and throughout the forehead. Your skin will continue to age, but BOTOX can certainly help those large muscles in the forehead relax.

Ideal Candidates

BOTOX is used for individuals who hope to temporarily diminish and soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, lines, and moderate folds on their face in a nonsurgical way. BOTOX is often thought of as a preventive treatment even if static wrinkles have not yet formed — keep in mind how often you tend to make facial expressions. It is an effective nonsurgical solution if you have obvious forehead lines or frown lines between the brows. It's also a solution for Crow's feet around the eyes. If you have deeper lines, a combination of BOTOX and a filler may be a better option. Also, if you are older with moderate to severe skin laxity, you may be a candidate for a facelift. This offers a more dramatic result and it is meant to last years. Dr. Leong offers various facelifts, blepharoplasties, and brow lifts as great options.

Procedure Technique

BOTOX injectable treatments are performed as an in-office appointment with Dr. Leong. If it is your first time to visit us for BOTOX, we usually perform the injection within the same appointment as your consultation. You will be asked to make a number of facial expressions using the upper face, such as squinting, frowning, etc., which will allow us to see where the injections need to be placed. The skin will be cleansed and BOTOX will be injected under the skin using a fine needle. We can provide a cold compress to help prevent bruising and discomfort. You can request a numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable, but it generally is not needed. BOTOX injections typically take about 10 – 15 minutes, then you can get back to your normal day almost immediately.

What to Expect

After the BOTOX injection, you are allowed to return to your normal schedule, but strenuous activities like exercise should be postponed for at least a day. You will be asked to sleep with your head propped up for the first night and to not touch your face, which may accidentally spread the BOTOX to other areas. Your face may become red, swollen, or bruised (where BOTOX was injected) for a couple of days, but you will not have any serious or lasting side effects. In the majority of cases, it generally takes about 5 – 7 days before the full effects of BOTOX become visible. The results generally last 3 – 4 months. You should speak to your injector about how often to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Leong to refresh your results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does BOTOX cost?
Your cost for a BOTOX treatment will depend on how much product is used. This will vary based on your needs and goals. During your consultation, Dr. Leong will create your personal treatment plan before she can estimate your costs. BOTOX can produce amazing results when performed by a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Leong, but it can also be unsafe if done by someone without training, which is why it's better to avoid places offering cheap, discounted, or knock-off injections.

How long will my results last?
The results from BOTOX can last up to four months. Most patients schedule an appointment every season or quarter to refresh their results, but you may want to come back sooner or wait longer. If you are getting BOTOX while you are younger as a preventative treatment, you may be able to schedule appointments further apart. After listening to your goals and creating your treatment plan, Dr. Leong will be better able to estimate when you should schedule your next appointment.

What's the difference between wrinkle relaxers and fillers?
Wrinkle relaxers like BOTOX and wrinkle fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane are both popular cosmetic treatments that decrease wrinkles and smooth fine lines. BOTOX relaxes overused facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, like frown lines (between the eyebrows), forehead wrinkles, Crow's feet (in the outer corners of the eyes), and smile lines. Wrinkle fillers add volume under the skin to fill hollow areas and decrease the appearance of wrinkles on the surface. Depending on your goals, Dr. Leong may recommend BOTOX, injectable fillers, or a combination of both for a "liquid facelift."

What's the difference between BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin?
BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin are all injectable wrinkle treatments that use botulinum toxin (type A). All three relax facial muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles, but each formula is slightly different to suit different areas and needs. There are subtle differences between them is the dosage, spread, and length of results. Dr. Leong will choose the best brand or brands to match with your needs.

Is BOTOX safe?
When administered properly, BOTOX rarely causes any complications. With that said, it is still very important to find someone who has experience in handling this medication, like Dr. Leong. Too much of the product can cause an undesirable outcome. A skilled practitioner will use just enough of the medication to effectively freeze the facial muscles that cause wrinkles while leaving nearby muscles unaffected. BOTOX is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments on the market today. It is safe and effective, and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to cosmetic uses, BOTOX is also used to treat medical conditions such as facial spasms, excessive sweating, uncontrollable blinking, and migraines.
