About Chemical Peels
Booking a chemical peel, like an IMAGE Peel or a RevePeel, is an exceptional way to treat your skin to a deeper clean than just using an exfoliant. The knowledgeable aesthetics team and plastic surgeon Dr. Karen Leong will perform an assessment of your skin at our Newport Beach, CA office to see what type of chemical peel would properly meet your needs. Acne scars, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, wrinkles, and fine lines can be addressed with a chemical peel. We offer pharmaceutical-grade chemical peels (which should only be performed by a medical professional) made with solutions of glycolic, salicylic, lactic, and trichloroacetic acids to remove dead or damaged skin cells. The application of a chemical peel on your skin will cause the top layer to peel off. As your skin heals and begins to rejuvenate and repair itself, you should notice a clearer, smoother complexion. A chemical peel is a noninvasive way to make your skin bright and is appropriate for the face, neck, and décollatage.
Variations of Chemical Peels
At our Newport Beach, CA office, we provide chemical peels in three levels (light, medium, and deep) to fit our patients' skin care needs.
Light peels: You can have a light chemical peel on your lunch break and get back to your day. This strength of peel will remove the top layer of skin (the epidermis), giving your complexion a brighter appearance and softer texture. We typically suggest that you get a light treatment around once a month for the best glowing results.
Medium-depth peels: This strength of chemical peel penetrates deeper into your skin, and you'll usually prefer to do this level of facial rejuvenation treatment over a long weekend. You may also prefer to prepare yourself for more discomfort during and around an hour after chemical peel. Medium-depth peels are best for patients who have significant damage to their skin such as deeper wrinkles and darker pigmentation issues.
Deep peels: The most advanced of the three types of chemical peels is the deep peel treatment, and it will require the most recovery time. This is an aggressive cosmetic treatment that could leave your face swollen, itchy, and peeling for several weeks. Patients who receive a deep peel usually have dark age spots, sun-damaged skin, significant acne scars, or deep-seated scars. As this strength of peel is typically uncomfortable for most patients, we will provide you with mild anesthesia prior to your procedure.
"Dr. Leong has been handling all of my plastic surgery needs since my double Mastectomy back in March. With everything that I’ve been through up to this point she has always been there during any needs that I had. I appreciate her one on one with me and always being there. She does amazing work. I have expanders in now and look forward to my implants in February. Thanks for always being there Dr. Leong!"- J.M. / Yelp / Dec 26, 2019

"Breast Implant Removal with Dr Karen Leong at Face N Body Upland: I had my breast implants removed one month ago by Dr Karen Leong. I was recommended by a coworker who had the same procedure done earlier this year with great results. My experience was AMAZING from my first consultation visit through the entire process. The staff at the front desk Amanda, Audrey, and Lisa are very welcoming, sweet, and knowledgeable about any questions you may have. Dr Leong is personable, attentive, and thorough which I think sometimes doctors lack at the beside, but not her! She is willing to answer any and all questions without hesitation. If you are looking into breast implants removal because of "breast implant illness/BII" she is open minded about the new research coming out. I am a nurse myself, so I have been intrigued by so many women's symptoms but awaiting clear researched backed evidence. She takes a similar stance, and overall if you are worried and want them out she will help you without judgment or making you feel like it's "in your head". That being said I was not sick, but had some vague symptoms, capsular contracture, and after 16 years I wanted them removed, not replaced, and without a lift. She heard all of my concerns and was supportive and up to the task. Surgery day was a success! Nurse Monique, the OR team (didn't get their names because I was so nervous and then asleep) and the anesthesiologist Dr Melisa Erick were all beyond good to me, and I am so thankful for their expertise and calming demeanors. Follow-up the day after surgery and throughout recovery I felt closely monitored and cared for. Suture and drain removal were done by nurse Monique and Jennifer and they were caring, professional, skillful, and personable. Overall I really could not be more pleased with my care and results. Dr Leong is a very meticulous surgeon and she was able to remove my entire capsules and provide photos of the capsules and implants which I requested. My results are fantastic and my new (old) breasts look amazing. As I mentioned, I am a nurse, I know many doctors and I can assure you she is top notch! This whole process has been a pleasure and I am so thankful to each and every person at Face N Body who helped me through my journey. You will not be disappointed in your care or procedure if you choose Dr Leong and her staff. Side note: My implants were done in 2003 by a prominent Beverly Hills surgeon who has since passed. I had a consultation in Beverly Hills for removal first since that's what I knew, but I received better care at Face N Body without the drive, inflated cost, and attitude that sometimes comes with the 90210 zip code. Trust me, location does not equal better care. Good Luck on your journey"- K.K. / Yelp / Nov 14, 2019
"Dr. Karen Leong removed my breast implants and I'm so happy with my results! At my initial consultation I expressed concerns about my symptoms due to breast implant illness /BII. She was very supportive and acknowledged my feelings and symptoms unlike previous surgeons who brushed me off and made me feel like I was crazy. Not only is she beautiful and sweet but also an amazing meticulous surgeon. She removed my entire capsules and showed me pictures of my implants and capsules. My incisions look great and are hardly noticeable now. I am a nurse so I have very high expectations. She exceeded my expectations. She is my plastic surgeon for life!"- J.B. / Yelp / Nov 14, 2019
Chemical Peel Ideal Candidates
Receiving the suggestions of an aesthetic professional is the first step in the quest toward healthier skin. Dr. Leong can assess your skin in a consultation before choosing a chemical peel treatment. Chemical peel candidates, of both genders, typically have noticeable problems in their skin like acne scars, rough patches, flaky skin, discoloration, sun spots, fine lines, and much more. If you are prone to rosacea or eczema, these skin conditions may be triggered by a chemical peel, which would not make you a great candidate for this facial rejuvenation treatment.
Chemical Peel Procedure Technique
During your chemical peel in our MedSpa treatment room, we will have you lying down in a relaxed position to administer your peel. We will make sure your skin is cleansed before applying the customized solution to your treatment areas. We will massage the solution onto your face and let it set for a specific amount of time, which will be discussed in your treatment planning session. Finally, we will wash the solution off your face and apply a neutralizing agent. You are encouraged to bring a light sunscreen or a hat to wear outside after the peel to protect from environmental exposure and sunburn. Your skin will be more sensitive to light after your peel.
What to Expect with Chemical Peel
Depending on the level of the chemical peel you choose, you can expect the face to itch and flake a few days to a couple weeks. Dr. Leong or a member of her team will explain different methods to care for your skin at home. Please keep in mind that no matter how much your skin itches during the post-treatment period, it is never helpful to pick the skin off. You could cause scarring to your delicate skin!
Chemical Peel Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a chemical peel cost?
Dr. Leong will discuss your costs in your consultation once she has created your personalized treatment plan. The cost of a chemical peel can vary based on the intensity you choose. Dr. Leong accepts many payments methods and we often run specials on skin treatments like chemical peels. You may also consider buying a package of several chemical peel treatments.
What level should I choose for my chemical peel?
The best chemical peel for you will depend on your unique skin concerns and cosmetic goals. During your consultation with Dr. Leong, she will help you decide which peel is right for your skin. Some factors you may want to consider are your overall health, your skin type, how deep you want the peel to work, how long you can spend in recovery, and what concerns you have about the appearance of your skin. For your first peel, it is better to try a lighter peel and see how you like the results. From there, you and Dr. Leong can adjust your treatment plan to find the right chemical peel level for you.
Should I get a chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment?
Dermabrasion is a facial rejuvenation procedure that treats surface irregularities, giving the skin a softer appearance. Dermabrasion works in many ways similar to a chemical peel. The difference is that dermabrasion uses surgical tools (a rotating brush or shaving instrument) to remove the top layer of skin through a surgical scraping process. A chemical peel uses a caustic solution that is rubbed into the skin. Both techniques result in a brighter, smoother complexion. Dr. Leong will discuss the advantages of each and help you decide whether a chemical peel or dermabrasion is more appropriate for your needs and goals.
Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?
Depending on the peel used, you may have some discomfort during and shortly after your peel. If you get a lighter peel, you will feel some stinging but it goes away quickly with the use of a handheld fan. The peeling process itself does not cause any pain. Medium and deep peels are good for deeper skin damage and longer lasting results, but they can be more uncomfortable. Topical anesthetics, skin medications, and soothing ointments can be applied to minimize pain.
Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?
A chemical peel may be combined with many other nonsurgical skin treatments. During your consultation, be honest with Dr. Leong about your skin and cosmetic concerns so she can create a comprehensive treatment plan that delivers vibrant results. This may include adding injectable wrinkle treatments (like BOTOX or Juvéderm) along with your chemical peel to rejuvenate more of your facial appearance.
