About Microdermabrasion

If you run your hands over your face, does your skin feel soft and smooth or rough? If the latter, the outer layer of your skin may be covered with dead and damaged skin cells that make your complexion dull and uneven. At Dr. Karen Leong's plastic surgery practice in Upland, CA, she offers noninvasive skin resurfacing with microdermabrasion. Quick and effective, microdermabrasion treatments remove the surface layer of dead skin cells, so your complexion is brighter and healthier. This procedure can be used alone or with another treatment, like a dermal filler injection or chemical peel, for more dramatic improvements. During your consultation, Dr. Leong will come up with a personalized treatment plan to fit your needs and complexion goals. We look forward to making your skin look amazing at one of our locations.

Ideal Candidates

Microdermabrasion sessions can minimize the look of surface skin blemishes like fine lines, uneven texture, dull skin tone, sun damage, scars, and clogged pores. It is safe and effective for women and men of all skin tone and type that want healthier, clearer skin. These treatments are usually performed on the face, although it can also be great for the skin on your neck, chest, and hands. This procedure should not be performed on skin that has an open wound or if you have a chronic condition, like acne or rosacea.

Procedure Technique

Microdermabrasion treatments are completed in our office after a thorough consultation to determine what services will give you your biggest results. For the treatment, you will lie back in a comfortable chair as your skin is prepared. The microdermabrasion handpiece will run along your skin as it polishes and vacuums the debris. While the treatment feels unusual, it not considered painful, so you wouldn't need a numbing cream or topical anesthesia. The microdermabrasion will be applied evenly over the needed areas, with more caution given to the delicate skin around the eyes. As soon as the treatment is over, the skin will be lightly cleansed to remove any residual debris before a moisturizer, selected for your skin type with UV protection, is applied.

What to Expect

After a microdermabrasion procedure, you can get back to your normal routine as long as you wear sunscreen or another form of sun protection since your skin will be sensitive. Your face should feel smoother and your tone will look brighter. To prolong the benefits, Dr. Leong recommends scheduling these procedures every 4 – 6 weeks. Some of Dr. Leong's patients notice that after treatments, the skincare products they use at home (especially moisturizers) absorb more easily into their skin for better results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a microdermabrasion cost?
The fees for microdermabrasion will be discussed with you at your one-on-one consultation in our plastic surgery practice in Upland, CA. As this is an aesthetic treatment, it will be an out-of-pocket expense.

Who can perform a microdermabrasion treatment?
Trained plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and certified medical aestheticians can perform microdermabrasion on your skin. You do not want to have someone that can do more harm than good by giving you this treatment. There are many factors you need to discuss with your microdermabrasion provider, such as what medication you are taking, your health history, your scar history, and if you have any suspicious spots on your face that should never be treated with microdermabrasion. This is not a simple spa treatment for your facial skin and should be performed by a certified medical professional.

I have eczema. Can I get a microdermabrasion treatment?
Eczema and microdermabrasion do not mix well together. Avoid doctors or aestheticians who tell you otherwise. Microdermabrasion should not be performed on anyone with eczema, rosacea, or any other skin condition that is triggered by heat or friction. Again, a certified medical professional would know not to perform this treatment on your skin. It is important to find a plastic surgeon, like Dr. Leong, whom you can trust.

What is the difference between microdermabrasion and a chemical peel?
The main difference between microdermabrasion and a chemical peel is intensity. Light chemical peels and microdermabrasion get similar results but with different techniques. Medium to deep chemical peels are more intense on your skin but will produce dramatic results. Depending on the type of chemical peel you have, it may be a more aggressive treatment than microdermabrasion. If you are interested in both treatments, you can discuss their pros and cons with Dr. Leong at your consultation.
