If the outer lips of the vulva are really loose, hang down, and are floppy, they may cause you physical embarrassment and discomfort and negatively affect your self-esteem. Camel toes in workout clothing or irritation while doing activities like cycling are aesthetic and comfort issues for which you should consider a labia majoraplasty with Dr. Karen Leong.

What is a Labia Majora Reduction?

Labia majora reduction or surgery to trim the outer lips of the vulva is becoming increasingly popular. Women now understand that they do not have to live with the discomfort and embarrassment of disproportionate outer vulva lips. Dr. Karen Leong can help you decide if this is the right choice for you, or you can opt for other vaginal rejuvenation options to help tighten the skin down there.

What Is a Labia Majora Reduction Procedure Like?

Labia majoraplasty is an elective procedure usually done in the office and takes about an hour to complete. However, if you elect to have other procedures in the same surgery, it may require more time at a surgery center.

Most patients tolerate the procedure very well with local anesthesia and/or light oral sedation. Topical numbing cream works extremely well in this sensitive area! The amount of skin removed from the labia depends on how much excess tissue there is to trim back and may differ from side to side. Dr. Leong will remove the excess skin and some underlying tissue from the labia majora to shrink and firm the remaining tissue.

The scars are hidden in the inner creases of the thighs and are almost impossible to detect once fully healed. If there is volume loss, a small amount of fat from another area in the body or a hyaluronic acid filler such as Voluma may also be injected to make the lips look fuller. Finally, you can have the long-desired symmetric and younger-looking vagina.

Dr. Leong tailors the surgery to the patient’s overall desire for an aesthetic outcome. This may involve additional surgical procedures like a labiaplasty, clitoral hood rejuvenation and/or vaginoplasty, and nonsurgical rejuvenation of the vagina with laser therapy.

Recovery and Results after a Labia Majora Reduction

Immediately following the labia majoraplasty, it is common to experience bruising, swelling, and some soreness that can be managed through pain medication. It may take a few weeks for the tissues to heal and the swelling to subside enough for you to be able to see actual results.

Plan on spending three to four days at home before resuming light activities or being able to return to work. Around six to eight weeks after the procedure, Dr. Leong will evaluate your condition and advise if you can resume normal activities.

Most women report great satisfaction with the way their new vagina looks and especially enjoy the ability to wear form-fitting clothes. For those who have been quietly suffering through years of discomfort, it is a drastic improvement down there!

Am I a Good Candidate for Labia Majora Reduction?

If you desire reduced outer labia–either due to physical discomfort or for aesthetic reasons– a labia majora reduction may be right for you. The irritation and dryness of the outer labia due to chaffing may be keeping you from having an active lifestyle, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t wear the clothes you desire or suffer from dissatisfaction with the way your vagina looks. We understand how these restrictions can negatively impact your overall confidence.

Dr. Leong is committed to first understanding your goals and then mapping out a plan that best suits your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of a labia majora reduction?

There are many variables to a labia majoraplasty surgery like additional procedures required, any follow-up treatment, need for a surgical center, post-op care, etc. Based on your consultation with Dr. Leong, our staff will be able to guide you through the entire payment plan and also help you with financing the surgery.

Should I choose a plastic surgeon or OB/GYN?

When researching the aesthetic surgery market, most patients will find that a large majority of plastic surgeons offer labiaplasty. While many OB/GYNs are capable of performing labia rejuvenation, the procedure is most often considered cosmetic. An OB/GYN will be able to surgically remove any excess skin within the labia; however, a plastic surgeon like Dr. Leong will consider the aesthetics as well to keep scarring at a minimum, and that color, contour, and symmetry all look and feel natural.

Will vaginal rejuvenation surgery cause insensitivity?

As with any surgery, there may be numbness in the vaginal area after the procedure is completed. This should only be temporary until the skin and vaginal lips heal. In regards to sensitivity, it is important to understand that labia rejuvenation effects, for the most part, the vaginal lips only. Sensitivity is served by the clitoris. A skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. Leong, who has many years of experience performing vaginal rejuvenation surgery, will work around this area so that a loss of sensitivity does not occur.
